Flea and Tick Season Is Here – Keep Your Épagneul Breton Safe Naturally

Spring and summer mean more time outside for your Épagneul Breton—but they also mark the height of flea and tick season. If your pup loves exploring brushy fields, wooded trails, and tall grass (which most of them do!), they’re at high risk for picking up unwanted hitchhikers.

Why Natural Prevention Matters

While there are plenty of chemical flea and tick preventatives on the market, they’re not always ideal—especially for young dogs or sensitive breeds. Fortunately, there are safe, effective natural alternatives. Regular grooming, natural sprays (like diluted essential oils), diatomaceous earth, and even homemade herbal rinses can help repel pests without harsh ingredients. A quick check after every outdoor adventure can also make a big difference.

What to Do If You Find a Tick

Even with the best prevention, a tick might still find its way onto your dog. Here’s what to do:

Use a tick removal tool like a Tick Twister or fine-tipped tweezers.

Grasp the tick as close to your dog’s skin as possible and pull it out slowly and steadily—no twisting or jerking.

Make sure the entire tick (especially the head) is removed.

Clean the bite area with antiseptic or warm soapy water.

Safe Tick Disposal

Don’t just toss the tick in the trash. To safely kill it, place it in a sealed container with rubbing alcohol, wrap it tightly in tape, or flush it down the toilet. Never crush a tick with your fingers—it could still carry disease. And always wash your hands thoroughly after handling one.

Bottom Line

Your Épagneul Breton deserves to enjoy the great outdoors without bringing home pests. With a little vigilance, safe removal tools, and natural protection methods, you can keep your pup healthy, happy, and ready for the next hunt or hike.
